Want to be a Lassiter Ambassador?

The Lassiter Ambassador program is a new program that uses responsible, involved upperclassman to help mentor and aid the freshman class as they transition to high school. Through this youth leadership program, you will be responsible for attending freshmen orientation on July 31. We will assign you a freshmen advisement class that you will visit regularly throughout the 2015-16 school year. We may also ask ambassadors to help with other events throughout the school year.

Current sophomores and juniors are eligible to apply, and the application is due to the counseling office by April 3. Please see Mrs. Hughes in the counseling office or Mrs. Gonzalez in room 305, if you have any questions.

Lassiter Receives National Advanced Placement Recognition

On February 18, 2015, State School Superintendent Richard Woods named 609 Advanced Placement (AP) Honor Schools. The College Board administers the Advanced Placement (AP) classes and exams, in addition to administering the SAT. AP classes offer rigorous college-level learning options to students in high school. Students who receive a three, four, or five on AP exams may receive college credit. They are currently recognizing Lassiter as a 2015 AP Merit School, 2015 AP Stem School, and 2015 AP Stem Achievement School. Congrats to all of you for your continued dedication to challenging our students.

They name the 2015 AP Honor Schools in five categories, based on the results of 2014 AP classes and exams:

  • AP Challenge Schools are schools with enrollments of 900 or fewer students and students testing in four of the core areas (English, math, science, and social studies).
  • AP Access and Support Schools are schools with at least thirty percent of their AP exams taken by students who identified themselves as African American and/or Hispanic and thirty percent of all AP exams earning scores of three or higher.
  • AP Merit Schools are schools with at least twenty percent of the student population taking AP exams and at least fifty percent of all AP exams earning scores of three or higher.
  • AP STEM Schools are schools with students testing in at least two AP math courses and two AP science courses (AP calculus AB, AB calculus BC, AP statistics, AP biology, AP chemistry, AP environmental science, AP physics B, AP physics C, and AP computer science).
  • AP STEM Achievement Schools are schools with students testing in at least two AP math courses and two AP science courses and at least forty percent of the exam scores on AP math and AP science exams earning scores of three or higher.
  • AP Humanities Schools are schools with students testing in all of the following AP courses: at least one ELA course, two social science courses, one fine arts course, and one world language course.

Earning Credit Through Demonstrating Subject Area Competency (Testing Out)

As of February 24, 2015, the Cobb County School District has made the following announcement:

In response to the state’s recent announcement that local systems could decide whether to offer test out or not, Cobb has decided that we will not offer the test out option this spring since we will not have scores back until this fall to inform necessary placement decisions. We will re-evaluate the option again in the fall and spring of next year. All questions should be directed to the office of assessment and personalized learning at the Cobb County School District website.

Beginning in the 2013-14 school year, students will have the option of testing out of a high school course. The deadlines to submit a registration form to the school counseling office are September 12, 2014, and February 27, 2015.

In order to test out, a student may participate in the administration of an End-of-Course Test prior to enrolling in and taking the course, and if he or she scores at the “exceeds” level on the state assessment, he or she will be awarded credit for that course.
